Ginger

Native to southern Asia, ginger has been used as a spice for thousands of years. Ginger belongs to a group of flowering plants called Zingiberaceae. The term “ginger” or “ginger root” typically refers to the part of the plant called a rhizome, a kind of stem that grows underground. The ginger root is closely related to other spices such as turmeric, cardamom and galangal, though ginger may be the most popular in terms of its use for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

Commonly known as a digestive aid, ginger is also excellent at relieving muscular aches, fatigue, congestion and nausea. It is a staple in Asian cuisine. The fresh ginger root can be used to make an aromatic tea. Ginger, both in its powdered or fresh state, is often added to foods and beverages, providing a distinct peppery flavor as well as health benefits. Ginger is antioxidant, analgesic, antiseptic, antibacterial and aphrodisiac.
