Olive Leaf

Olive leaf and olive leaf extract come from the olive tree (Olea europaea). The leaf, used since antiquity as a poultice for wounds and other injuries, also makes a therapeutic tea. Olive leaf tea is said to boost the immune system, protect the digestive system and reduce the risk of cancer. Olive leaf is antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Benefits of Olive Leaf for Skin:

  • Antimicrobial and healing. Olive leaf may be useful in treating wounds by accelerating healing within the skin. Its rich supply of polyphenols or plant-based compounds also protect skin cells from harmful microorganisms which would otherwise lead to infections. In addition, olive leaf extract is said to be an effective treatment for herpes and other viral infections that affect the skin.
  • Antioxidant properties. Olive leaf contains antioxidant properties. This is due, largely in part, to its rich supply of polyphenols like oleuropein, a plant-based compound which protects skin from free radicals that damage skin cells. One study suggests that oleuropein is as effective in combating free radicals as vitamins C and E.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties. Olive leaf also contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties which reduce incidents of inflammation. The result is skin that is healthier and more resilient against disease.
