Spearmint

Spearmint, an herb similar to peppermint, is native to the Mediterranean. Used in many cultures as a culinary herb, it also provides excellent treatment for headaches, acne, nausea, and indigestion. Much research has been done on its positive effect on cognitive function. In addition, it produces a fresh, cooling flavor that provides relief from halitosis or bad breath and is commonly used in toothpaste, mouthwash and other oral care products. Spearmint is antiseptic, antioxidant, astringent and stimulant.

Benefits of Spearmint for Skin:

  • Antiseptic and cleansing. Like peppermint, spearmint is also highly antiseptic. It is known to kill bacteria and other potentially harmful microorganisms. Spearmint and the essential oil it produces can be applied to the body to cleanse skin impurities.
  • Antioxidant properties. Other benefits of spearmint for skin relate to its rich antioxidant content. Spearmint offers an impressive supply of antioxidant compounds such as limonene, menthol and rosmarinic acid. These antioxidants offer protection to skin cells while killing harmful bacteria. The result is skin that effectively fights infections and microorganisms that may cause disease. Antioxidants are also known to curtail the impact of free radicals which often result in damage to skin cells.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties. Spearmint is rich in anti-inflammatory properties. For instance, the antioxidant called rosmarinic acid which is present in spearmint performs anti-inflammatory functions. This acid prevents and treats allergic reactions which may result in inflamed, irritated skin.
