Witch Hazel Leaf

Witch hazel is a member of the hazelnut family. The term “witch” is a corruption of the old English word for weak. It was first used by Native Americans as a medicinal plant and recorded for its therapeutic use as far back as 1670. Witch hazel leaf can be applied to the skin and scalp to relieve dandruff and sensitive, itchy skin. It also treats cough, colds, sore throat and diarrhea.

The distilled liquids from the witch hazel plant produce products like witch hazel water and witch hazel extract which are often used as an astringent. Witch hazel leaf is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial.

Benefits of Witch Hazel Leaf for Skin:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties. Witch hazel contains anti-inflammatory properties which provide your skin relief from itchiness, flaking and redness associated with dandruff and other skin conditions. Reducing inflammation has the added benefit of tightening enlarged pores, improving the appearance and feel of facial skin. Witch hazel has traditionally been used for skin and scalp and is highly effective at maintaining the good health of both.
  • Antioxidant and healing properties. Witch hazel leaf is rich in tannins, plant-based chemicals which exude powerful antioxidant functions. Tannins in witch hazel leaf promote healing by repairing damaged skin. They also fights bacteria and harmful toxins that may lead to skin infections. In general, antioxidants are known for their protective properties. They are essential in protecting your skin against harmful sun exposure which leads to premature aging.
  • Treats insect bites and stings. Another benefit of witch hazel relates to its ability to soothe skin affected by insect bites or stings. The antibacterial and astringent properties in witch hazel leaf cleanse the skin, removing harmful bacteria. This speeds up healing while soothing the skin.
