Canada Balsam

Canada Balsam, also known as Balsam Pitch or Balm of Gilead, comes from the Eastern United States and Canada. This evergreen tree grows near wet woods, swamps and rivers. The plant produces resin which contains a unique essential oil that exudes a woody scent said to calm both body and mind. Because of its optical quality, Canadian balsam was used as a glue for optics, as well as for mounting on microscope slides.

As an essential oil, Canadian balsam is antiseptic, antidepressant, stimulant, and anti-inflammatory. For thousands of years, Canada balsam has been used externally to treat burns, sores, warts, and cuts. It has also been widely noted that Native Americans applied Canada balsam using a poultice to treat wounds.

Benefits of Canada Balsam for Skin:

  • Antiseptic and cleansing: The resin from the balsam fir tree is very antiseptic. When applied to the skin, the Canadian balsam removes microorganisms which would otherwise lead to infections.
  • Stimulates healing: Canada Balsam also contains a compound called sesquiterpene which stimulates cell repair and reduces inflammation in the skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Skin inflammation can result in swelling, bruising and infection. The anti-inflammatory properties in Canada Balsam protect your skin while making it heal faster.
